Disgusting job
« on: June 29, 2010, 15:28 »
Have just spent half an hour scraping lily beetle larvae off my pots of lilies in the garden -eeurgh! There are loads of them.
My aged pa has also found at least 30 on his lilies - is this an exceptionally bad year?

"Bug off" seems to work.  Are they lilly beetles, bright red.  Mine were worse for the beetles last year, so not particularly this year being bad for them.

I thought that was what it was called but can't find it online now, unless they have changed the name to "Bug Clear".  Also there is Provado "Ultimate Bug Killer ".  You can get these at B&Q

Bug clear is contact action and short lived. Provado Ultimate bug killer is systemic and stays in the leaves.

Or you can spend all day searching for them and squash the little bug**rs!  :tongue2:

We have given up attempting to grow all but a very few lillies due the little red devils  >:(

Ah... The Yellow bottle... I've got that. I try not to use it - I just wander around with it so the bugs get the idea of "what comes next" if they don't find an alternative plot  ::)  ;)

Oddpod,I recently asked a question about this disgusting creature and how to rid myself of it. I was given all kinds of excellent advice and from it I have discovered the 'little yellow bottle' is called 'Bug rite' and it works!

I'm looking after my sister in law's garden while she's on holiday and I went to water tonight and noticed the lillies are covered in larvae so I'll be spraying tomorrow.........she only went away 2 days ago, I just hope they look OK when she comes back in 12 days time!

Thanks all for the info - I was trying so hard to be organic about this, in view of birds and other wildlife but sometimes you have no choice. So I'm thinking that this will join the list of weedkiller and slug pellets. Does plant food count as organic?

It does if it is an organic plant food.  ;)

If you have the time you could investigate Neem oil.  Look it all up on google just something at the back of my mind.  I used to work with an idian lady and I remeber her mentioning it.  I only mention her being Indian as they know quite a lot about oils and natural remedies, I learnt quite a lot from them at my old job for Croydon council.
