Ruby's still not right.
« on: June 17, 2010, 08:48 »
I took Ruby to the vet around two weeks ago, she had an upper respiratory infection. She's 14 weeks old.
Ruby has just finished a course of Baytril and seems to be much better. Her nostril is clear and her eye and she is up and about much more.
There is one problem though:- she seems to have a weak left leg. It seems to collapse under her sometimes and she holds her tail to one side as if to hold her balance. She walks a bit sideways also and seems unsure of jumping off anything.
Is this a sign of a more serious disease?
Or is she going to be ok with a quirkiness? because she seems fine.
El.

her eye could still be wrong or perhaps it's an ear problem making her lose her balance. I would take her back to the vets for another check up just to make sure it's nothing else.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Had to take Ruby to the vet yesterday and have her put down.
She had got worse over the weekend and was struggling to get about.
Apparently it was neurological and was only going to get worse.
I've been very upset. We only had her for 3 weeks but she had managed to wangle her way into our hearts during that short time. Bless her, it was sad to see her struggling.

Sorry to hear about Ruby. Unfortunately I haven't got a lot of faith with my vet when it comes to chickens. One of my chicks injured his leg and the vet advised putting him down. I didn't agree. A bit of TLC and rest for a few days and he's much improved, I think in time he'll be back to normal.

Thanks. Our vets are very good. We had a chicken that had completely gone off her legs and they were very helpful. That chicken recovered completely and is back at the top of the pecking order where she belongs. They did their best for this one too. I did take her four times altogether and they were very good every time. Sometimes you just have to do the kindest thing and let go, for the sake of the animal. I will always try my best for them but I will not be one of those people that hang onto the poor animal when clearly there is no hope.

sorry to here about Ruby, it sounds like you you tried all you could and then did the right thing, it's a tough decision and one i had to make last week (with pet mouse, only 7 months old) but you can't see them suffer.x
