Rhubarb
« on: June 20, 2010, 18:08 »
I put in a new crown last summer i bought from the garden centre (i think it was 1 year old) and it seems to have taken off...

I read somewhere that you shouldn't harvest anything in it's first year so i left it well alone, the same article says that in the 2nd year you can harvest 2-3 stalks at a time, making sure you always leave about 5 stalks remaining.

i've left it alone so far because i wanted to make sure it was established and happy before i started harvesting it.

But my rhubarb has like a 30 stalks!! it's really taken off ... its like a small triffid about 5ft wide in all directions. none of the stalks are wide but they are about 1-2ft long each the variety is victoria.

Do you think it would be safe to harvest some?? if so how much?? and how often?
