who do you inform?
« on: June 20, 2007, 10:29 »
Last year when I got my first (half) allotment plot, I remember carefully reading the tenants agreement and I vaguely recall something about informing some organisation (DEFRA? which seems a bit OTT but perhaps it was some local authority?) should I decide to keep chickens.  Since then, I have taken on another plot and the idea of devoting some space to poultry is appealling.  I am now seriously looking into it but can I find any reference to whatever organisation I was supposed to inform!  Was this just a one off when avian flu seem to hit the headlines big time?

DEFRA maintain a (compulsory) register of all poultry keepers who have more than 50 birds.

But check your tenants agreement, perhaps the Council want to know for other reasons?

thanks for the info, I'll have a word with the Council.  I decided to have a look at the DEFRA website anyway and it has some useful advice.  Apparently there is a voluntary registration should you have less than 50 birds.

be carefull who you tell you have chickens to it could mean a lot of expensive european clap trap should some new eropean law or regulation be passes all because you told a certain organization you have 20 birds.
not saying anything against it just my own personal thought.

To follow on from my earlier post, I contacted the Town Clerk who administers the allotment sites.  It seems THEY want to know who has chickens in case they escape and they need to know where to return them (and probably give the owners a ticking off as well)!  I had a really nice long chat with her, and she gave me loads of advice about things I had not considered.

Yeah, I second what alan says! Last year I was given permission to keep my chickens at allotment site,  now the council have issued a directive that no one can keep livestock on them any more!  when I checked with other people in the borough they knew nothing???  very odd.  Having to move all the birds I have there now.  annoying and inconvenient.  Look out for nosey, jealous people!
