Help ! Prolapse girl has been attacked
« on: May 15, 2010, 22:02 »
I found one of my girls has a prolapse but I was too late -  the rest of the girls had attacked her -  I feel so guilty and ashamed .  I did not finish work until late yesterday and was exhausted when I got in,  so did not do my usual checks.

She was very messy , I bathed her as best I could ,  have isolated her  ,  put some tonic in her water and am keeping her quiet.  she has a very sweet sickly smell to her and ther is a clear discharge dripping from her back area.

I have read about the preparation H , but am unsure to put it on  an open wound.

Please help ,  I dont want to loose her.

Thanks

Lisa

Dear all,

Summer was put to sleep today. Bless her !  I am heart broken and so is my daughter but it was the best thing for her.  The Vet was really lovely,  she tried to clean her up , she had to have gas and Air as she was becoming very distressed,  the prolapse popped back in , but she had alot of damage.  Just when I was ready to take her home to see how it went the prolapse came back out and she looked so tired , bless her,  I had to let her go.

I told the vet I felt so guilty that I was not there to stop the other attacking her , but she said its nature and not to feel bad.   The vet promised she would not suffer and shes going to be cremated.

I feel so sad , I have had her scince she was 5 weeks old.

Thanks for your responses.  Its good to be able to speak to you.

I lost Angel ( Buff Orpington) exactly the same way as I lost Summer -  Prolapse and one of my gingernuts Amber got her -  I actually witnessed the attack and I have to say I am feeling so Angry at Amber ,

Angel was in shock and I checked her and could see that she was in a bad way and whipped her up to the vets at 6pm tongiht ,  the vet took one look at her and Amber had punctured her rectom,  I just asked them to put her to sleep -  she looked so sad.

I was absolutely beside myself , the vet did not charge me.  He said to me your not having much luck are you my dear !  My daughter was in tears as well.

I know what a prolapse is - obviously - but I want to know why it happens ,  if there a weakness and I doing something wrong.  This is my second girl that I have lost and its not fair - they were lovely girls.

Any comments would be appreciated.

I have isolated Amber , her head is covered in Angels blood !  I can't bear to look at her.  I think I need to get rid of her -  or do you think this is uncessecary ?

Thanks for listening

Don't blame Amber Basil, she was only doing what comes naturally to many animals.  Survival of the fittest and all that!  You see another chicken with a weakness and especially with a prolapse.  horrid to say but must look very inviting as they love blood and redness.

I've lost quite a few chooks these past 3 years to feather pecking (The Amberlinks when they get to 7-9 weeks old are the worst!)  I've even gone in the henhouse and found one that they had eaten her whole insides and just left the body there!  But to them its free food.

I am sorry you had 2 with the prolapse though.   :( :(
