No eggs
« on: June 18, 2010, 15:52 »
Hi all,
New to all this chicken stuff. We have 2 Isa chickens for over a week now and no hint of an egg. :( Do they need a long time to settle as they seem fine eating, drinking, scratching around and giving themselves a good dust bath. I let them out between 6-6.30 in the morning and they normally put themselves to bed betwwen 9-9.30 depending on how light the evening is. The kids pop down to see them as soon as they come home from school and feed them their treats, which they love. I fact as soon as you get near them they think that they are going to get a treat. I have noticed though that 1 of them seems to bully the other one about a bit when it comes to treat time.
The food I am giving them is the same food they were given at the supplier I got them from.
I am going to give them a change of bedding in the nest at the weekend and spray for red mite.
The only thing I think it might be is they dont like my dog. He sits and watches them, sometimes runs around the run but never aggresively or barking at them.  They just seem to look up from scrathing around and ignore him.
Any help or ideas would be a great help.

Hi Rugbyman,

Any idea how old your girls are? Were they sold to you as point of lay?

They sound nicely settled and I wouldn't worry over-much about them establishing their pecking order...

Pics please  :)

How old are you 2 Isa's?  How big/red are their combs?  If they are getting close to laying they will also sometimes squat when you approach them.  This is them thinking you are a cockerel and that is why they do it although not all do. Also, what food are they on?  Growers or layers?  Sorry for all the questions but without those answers it is very difficult to say why they haven't laid yet. :)
2 Springer Spaniels, 1 Speckled Sussex,  1 Cuckoo Maran, 1 Light Sussex, 1 Welsummer, 2 Barnvelders and 2 silver Pencil Wyandotes.

I was sold them as POL and the food is layers pellets/mash. As for the combs well about a half inch. I forgot we had 1 egg on the first full day last Tuesday 8th June, we got them Monday 7th in the afternoon.

If you give them treats give it later on in the day and don't give them to much as they wont fill up one the layers. Fat chickens dont lay and they can get fat on to many treats ie corn. It may  take a time for them to start laying regulaly. so just enjoy having them, they can be great fun. :)
