Any ideas on why chickens crow after laying? Surely it would just alert predators, and do you know of any other birds who behave in the same way?

It's because they are jungle fowl.  If the sit on their nest for 30 mins to an hour they can lose contact with the rest of the flock who will be wandering off searching for food.  

They communicate all the time with different noises, sounds like moans of pain to me  :roll:   The flock shouts back - "it's OK were over here"  Hen finishes laying and calls "I've finished hope you saved me some food, where are you"
