We are always told that our brassicas dont like too much shade so why is it that cabbage and cauliflower droop in hot weather only to recover when the weather cools in the evenings/mornings?

My best caulis were grown under the shade of debris netting.

Mine only do this for a while after planting out

I have noticed in the past, that when it's very hot, plants do tend to look a bit 'stressed'.  We have just netted a 10 foot square gazebo frame (against the pigeons) I wonder whether an old sheet strategically placed would provide a bit of shade if needed or am I being a bit neurotic and over protective?  Would be interested to have comments.

Filtered sunlight.  I've noticed several allotment holders brassicas under enviromesh which is a bit shaded and they seem very well.
