Why aren't my spuds flowering?
« on: June 09, 2010, 14:35 »
On 13th March I planted 5 different varieties of first and second earlies in containers - Red Duke of York, Bonnie, Pentland Jav, Rocket and Orla. All of the plants look big and strong and healthy, apart from one that's developed brown spots on the leaves. Yet not one single plant is showing the slightest sign of flowers. Surely they should be flowering by now, shouldn't they? They're in a warm sheltered spot and watered regularly.

And any ideas what the brown spots could be? It seems to be only on the young leaves at the top of the plant and it's appeared in the past week. I'd take a picture if I could find the digi camera, but right now I can't.

Mine have not flowered, neither have my mum's and ours were in around the same time as yours. From some threads on here most people on here are giving theirs a while longer than normal because of the weather we have had..i'm sure someone who knows what they are talking about will be along to help with the brown spots soon enough  ;)

Could it be sun scorch? a rain shower and then strong sunshine? or even hail damage?

Not all earlies will flower. I use the counting of weeks method, count 11 weeks from planting and have a scratch, if they look right then dig.
This is one plant of Lady Crystal that I dug last night for tea...

My Pentland Javlin are just forming flower heads but I have been digging for over a week now.

I don't bother waiting for flowers,as mentioned above I count the weeks(for me its 12).Im not that bothered about the size of them I .If they were maincrop it would be a different story .

I think the cold weather has held a lot of stuff back this year

Some pots don't flower - I can't say now which ones. Best to have a furtle.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Well this coming weekend will be 13 weeks so I think I'll dig one up then and see what's there. Maybe the safest course would be to experiment on the one with spotty leaves, killing two birds with one stone :)

I would start with the Rocket first, since they're earliest, but sadly I can't read the labels any more cos like an idiot I used labels that aren't waterproof. I've tried shoving my hand inside the bags/pots but I always worry about disturbing the plant too much so I think I'm being a bit too gentle about it, never seem to be able to get far enough into the compost.
