Too late to start potatoes?
« on: June 06, 2010, 09:42 »
Hi I have some seed potatoes that have been chitting in my spare room, I started one lot off outside a few months ago and they are doing well but I kind of forgot about the others - is it too late to put them out now?

Thanks

I got a bargain bag at b & q the other day marked down to 10p 8). They are already well chitted so stuck them in just now..fingers crossed.
Do have another 4 bags fully earthed up and huge amount of leaves. Good luck with yours

I wasn't going to do potatoes this year, (too busy with new baby when it seemed like the right time to plant). But yesterday i found 6 supermarket spuds i'd put in a cupboard and forgotten about, with huge chits on. So today while baby was napping i bunged them in the ground. As blackisgreen says "what have we to lose?" :D

Planted even know they'll still grow quickly due to the warmer temperatures.

I'm sorry but if they are supermarket (i.e. sold for cooking) spuds then you have an awful lot to lose and so does anyone who grows spuds near  you.  They are not certified virus free and this runs the risk of introducing diseases to your soil and your area.

It is a huge risk for you and for others.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Yikes! i had no idea. I'd always thought that the argument against using eating potatoes was just that the supermarket ones tend to be insipid fast-growing tasteless things. I guess this means i should take them out :(
Luckily i'm growing them in my garden and my neighbours don't grow potatoes, so at least i'm not endangering anyone elses crop
