What Perennial Veggies Can We Grow In The UK?
« on: June 01, 2010, 18:11 »
Hiya

I asked this question on another forum because I am very interesting in growing veggies that look after themselves. We came up with the following:

Apart from Asparagus, Jerusalem Artichoke, Welsh Onions, many herbs, Rhubarb and Horseradish, Ransoms, Lime Leaves, Tree Onions, Kale and certain Broccoli, what other Veggies are perennials that we can grow in the UK?

I really appreciate it, thanks so much in advance  :)

Just curious... why did you want to know? Are you planning a perennial plot ?  ;)

Hiya

One of my favourite veggies are Jerusalem Artichokes that we are growing for the first time and everyone says that the come up every year and you can't get rid of them cos there is always one or two you miss.

This is my kind of gardening, lol. I love it when my lemon balm, fennel, different mints, chives, etc all come through lovely and strong without me doing anything, lol.

I read on another forum about perennial veggie growing and was instantly entranced, lol, but it didn't actually say what else there was to grow. I've googled, but not found much else and decided that this was the place to ask.

Cheers  :)

I didn't realise Kale was perrenial.  I dug it all up and gave it to the chickens!

I know it is a fruit rather than a veg, but strawberrys come back again.

rocket is not perennial but you can have rocket every year if you let it seed where it is growing... the tall Italian parsley and sorrel will do the same thing,

I am trying Broccoli Nine Star Perennial this year - not sure if it really will produce as the adverts claim but worth a try.

Globe Artichokes? I didn't know that, I will definitely try them out, bet I'm way too late with them this year though, thanks ! :)

I didn't ask about fruit cos our back garden is our fruit garden, and I am looking for veggies for the front garden.

Cheers
Herbie

Any more veggies...?

Is Swiss chard perennial?
I've had mine since last April and have been eating it all this time. It's put out flower stalks which we've also eaten, there are huge leaves with wide white stalks which do for 2 separate dishes (greens and julienne) and there are plenty of new baby leaves at the bottom for salad.
Marvellous plant!

Good King Henry is quite a good one for a ready supply of greens and you can steam the flowerheads as well.  tried them the other day and they weren't bad.

Have a look at these 2 sites for interesting and unusual stuff to grow.  Poynzfield do a lot of native plants which have been used as food plants for centuries and The Real Seed Company do unusual veg from all over the world.
