wrinkly eggs
« on: June 01, 2010, 15:27 »
Hello, one of my girls has just started to lay rather large and very wrinkly and pitted eggs, the first one was a double yolker and was fine, but with the other ones the white is half normal with some of it like water, the yolk part is also slightly wrinkled.  Is she coming to the end of her laying because she is a rescue hen, or some supplements needed? they have broccoli (they don't like cabbage) and also corn on the cobs (a great favourite 2 times a week) they are on layers mash. :)
any ideas??

yep she is in her dotage so her eggs will become strange sizes and shapes - this is why breeders get rid of them as apparently we the consumer want all even sized and shaped eggs  ;).
These sort of eggs were normal when I was growing up (many years ago) but now people don't ever get to see them unless you own your own chickens.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Odd shaped eggs are a sign of the end of lay I'm afraid... having said that, I often get eggs from my girls (who are only a years old) where the membrane covering the yolk is rather thick, and when you tilt the egg the yolk wrinkles!
