Mangetout on the ground...
« on: June 16, 2007, 20:05 »
Following the dreadful wather we're haveing most of my mangetout peas are lying down. Their stems are not broken but it looks like they have fallen because of the wind. My camera is broken so I can't even load up a picture!
Do not underestimate the therapeutic values of weeding!

Our broad beans were laying on the ground after the last lot of storms, within a few days they had all sprung up again, i just put a few sticks in to provide them with extra support. I bet yours will be ok too.

I'm just about to start picking my mangetout. I didn't realise it would grow so tall before flowering. There must be a good 3 feet before the flowers start, but at least the pods follow quickly.

My broad beans are taller than I hve ever seen before, some of them over 5 feet.
Luckily the only plants that the rain has flattened is flowers, not veg.

I use them as a 'normal' veg too, just give a light steam, very nice with new pots and a meat or a quiche, or whatever.. they are also nice  sliced up raw in a leafy salad for a bit of crunch.

When didi you plant? mine are a long way off being ready yeat, about 1 1/2 ft tall, mine are

Last year we picked first mangetout on 20 June and pulled up the plants on 15 July. They cropped very well but it felt like a short season so it'll be interesting to hear what others say and hear any tips on prolonging cropping.

I sowed mangetout direct on 9th March. They were through in 4 weeks although the ground was cold. Sowed more a month later. I am experimenting with sowing times to find best chance of succession.
