I had some growmore in the garage and gave my maincrop potatoes a good feeding of it a couple of weeks after they emerged (about 3 weeks ago). Now I am reading conflicting reports on whether this was a good idea or not? Any ideas

Growmore is a balanced fertiliser with a N:P:K analysis of 7:7:7

Specialist potato fertilisers have a considerably higher "K" analysis (potassium) but growmore is OK especially if your soil is poor, and definitely better than something like MiracleGrow which has a Nitrogen content which is really too high for spuds.

(Bit worried about the phrase "gave a good feeding of it"; hope you stuck to the recommended application rate!)

Because of the frost I have had to repeatedly hoe up the potatoes. Sprinkling fertiliser on the mound is not very benefiial to the plant. I use Vitax Q4 (NPK=5:7:10) dissolve 4 teaspoons in a 2 gallon bucket and pour over half a row (8 plants) Then I hose the plants to get the fertiliser to the roots. Rose fertiliser is very similar and just as concentrated.
