Mouldy Soil & Sun-Shy Dwarf Beans
« on: June 02, 2010, 10:24 »
Have followed some really helpful advice to bring on dwarf french runner beans, by keeping them in more shaded area, as they were wilting in sunlight (even when watered). They seem to have recovered and I sprinkled some organic feed on the soil to help them along.

Having done that I notice a white furry mould has now developed on top of the soil and I am wondering if it would be advisable to remove this? Would that be due to the feed?

Also the leaves are still wilting on exposure to sunlight. Would I be right in thinking these vegetables are not so sun loving?

Any advice and information for a newbie most welcome.

Can't quite work out whether you have planted them in their final position yet erainn.

Either way, they like a sunny position and the roots will soon catch up with the leaves when they are planted out. I wouldn't worry about the mould, which probaly has been encouraged by the damp conditions and the feeding; it will disappear pretty quickly especially if this warm weather continues.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Thanks for you advice, reallykind of you.

I have them in containers and have been keeping them in the shade, they are between 9 to 11 inches and beginning to develop beans.

Have removed the mould and now relocated the plant/pots into a sunny spot.

I'm being over-protective I guess, but seeing the leaves droop so quickly in the sun gets me scurrying them into a shady area, this time I'll try and leave them and hope they will recover.

Look really closely at the 'white furry mould'.

Is it by chance in exactly the same position as the pieces of organic feed?

Reason for asking is: sometimes organic feed, when not incorporated within the soil but left on the surface, can look a little like a mould as it breaks down.

Just a thought - it might be nothing to worry about at all if I am right.  ;)
