Too late for Onions??
« on: June 01, 2010, 08:31 »

I found some nice onion sets at the nursery yesterday. Clearly getting near the end of the planting season as they were discounted.

Quite mild and damp down here in Sussex though. Any thoughts on whether I'm too late
to get them in the ground?

You won't get much of a crop now, but if you have some spare ground and they havn't already gone soft and started to rot, you can eat them small at the end of the year. I'd rather spend my cash on a quick growing crop at this time of year.

Onions need to go in early in the season or they don't swell, I have fallen into the trap of buying reduced stock late and they have always come to nothing. There are so many other veg that you can plant now and get a good crop from.  :)
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

Magic. Great to get a broad range of views. I've got the space, the sets were nice and firm so I've put the onions in the ground tonight. Let's see how they do.

I had no idea Wilko's sold seeds and stuff. I might have to pop in and have a look around.  :)

go for it - can always use straight from ground if dont get enough sun to ripen and dry out enough to potentially be good keepers
