Housing - 1 large or several small?
« on: May 30, 2010, 14:30 »
Ok - I have a couple of coops and runs for 4 bigish hens each.  I'm figuring they will do for quarantine/sick bays ultimately.  At the moment I'm only using 1 inside an electrified area made with a 50m poultry net plus neighbours fence for the 4th side.

Now I have to start deciding how I'm going to arrange things.

When I visited a local lady, she had different pens sectioned off with different breeds etc.  It was a nice area enclosed with trees and shade as well as some sunny areas.

So I'm thinking maybe a big house is not such a clever idea?  Maybe several areas a few metres square, fenced with chicken wire, 1 coop for maybe 8-10 birds in each?, the whole lot enclosed in the electric fence?

It seems to make sense at the moment as I'm more interested in the breeding than the egg laying but then who knows what tomorrow will bring? ::)  Or should I say 'what next month will bring' when I get to see something hatch (or not :()

This is what I'm aiming for:

Pens 1 and 2 will be breeding pens, pen 3 will be for growers and pen 4 is for my layers

Gosh you wouldn't believe how similar that is to what was going through my mind. :)

My Breeding shed is 16ft x 8ft which Brian made for me and he divided it into 4 pens each with its own pophole and run, but smaller houses are easier as you can move them about.  Most of mine are too big to move around and there is no grass left in the runs.

With hindsight, I would have done things differently, but our first henhouse was already a permanent structure as we kept our goats in it.
