planting out?

I was going to pot these cabbages, calabrese, cauliflowers and brussels on to bigger pots today but could I just plant them straight out instead?

Nice healthy looking plants. I would plant them out. Just remember to really firm the soil around them, make sure they are properly spaced (the gaps will look too big at the moment) and protect them from pigeons with netting or similar.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

Hi Bluedave,

I planted out my cauliflowers, brussell sprouts and cabbages a couple of weeks ago here in Norfolk. They were about the same size as yours and are doing well. I have been watering them regularly though because we have not had much rain and they are under netting so that the pigeons don't feast on them!

The accepted rule is that they are big enough when they have 6 true leaves. You can plant them out early but they tend to get a bit leggy and lean over. Better to pot the small ones on, planting them with the leaf stalks at ground level, and then when you plant them into their final positions put them with leaves at ground level again.

Thanks for the info Salmo.  Mine did lean last year - now I know why.  Will delay planting for a week or two.
