what kind of garlic to get for planting?
« on: June 18, 2007, 14:35 »
just had an email from T&M who are offering free delivery (for subscribers to their email)  on garlic for autumn planting.

a couple of questions:

1) is it a good price?

2) if yes, what variety should I get, and how much?

3) If no, where else should I go to buy some?

I notice that they deliver it in October, is that an ok time to plant? Thanks in advance.
Organic :)

1. dunno.  Why don't you copy/paste the email into a posting?  :D
2. dunno.  Why don't you copy/paste the email into a posting?  How much space have you got?  How much do you eat in a year?
3. shop around the www to compare

October is fine.  I plant from Aug thru November

T & M sure looks expensive to me.  Trouble with buying supermarket stuff is knowing exactly what you are buying.  I started by buying about 4 different kinds and only replanted the ones which did best.

If your supermarket stocks garlic from The Really Garlicky Company, http://www.reallygarlicky.co.uk, get some of that.  Not the Patagonion Purple since that is out of phase for Northern Hemisphere.   Their regular porcelain garlic is a hard-necked variety which gives very large cloves (as anyone who traded for my smoked garlic can testify).

... received some plug plants from T&M which were actually decomposing in the packaging I doubt very much I will ever buy anything from them again!!

I bought my garlic last year from The Garlic Farm http://www.thegarlicfarm.co.uk/shopgarlic.asp?catid=7&cat=Planting+Garlic+Order+now+for+delivery+Sept%2E+2005&pcatid=1

They have quite a wide selection, the packaging and quality of the bulbs was fab.  I shared one of their collection with my dad and two friends and we all have great success ... with the exception of the elephant garlic, but that is notoriously temperamentaly anyhoo!
