Exploding eggs?
« on: May 27, 2010, 13:14 »
I have a friend who has a broody.  She was sitting on some eggs and when they went to get her out one day she was covered in muck and two of the eggs appeared to have exploded!  They washed her off and she now has one egg she is sitting on.  Any thoughts on what could have happened?

The eggs were addled.  Usually a hen would detect this and kick the eggs out of the nest first, but sometimes not.

Excuse my ignorance - what does addled mean?  Yes, apparently it was disgusting and they had to wash the poor broody :(

Rotten. Either the eggs were unfertilized, or they hadn't developed very far before dying.

I had an egg explde last night.  Fortunately I had removed it from under Rosie and had chucked it away where it expolded on impact.  Very, very disgusting.  I could smell it from over 10 yards away and a couple of hours later.
