My daughter and I have three black rock chooks because we like to know where our eggs come from.  When I was a kid my grandfather kept a lot of chickens and bantams and in their mash every morning he put a measure of Karswood powder (red stuff that look like chilli powder).  Is it still available or is it another one of those things that has faded into the mists of time.

Well i have just googled it, and it appears that this is a kind of poultry spice made up from crushed insects. It used to be very popular by the looks of it but i dont think its available anymore, try googling and see what you come up with :D

Quote off the net:

Karswood poultry spice, a chilli-like powder, was added to chicken feed despite birds not having receptors for capsaicin. The spice was used to "hot up" the chickens' rear ends, in the same way that a rather strong curry may affect you or me. This effect was thought to increase egg production.

When you think about it the effects must have been pretty miserable for the poor chickens if they had to suffer curry-like effects every day.   Thinking back, I used to quite like the smell when it was added to the hot mash and from memory would describe it as hot and spicy.

Chooks with burning bums!!!!!!!!
