I think SS had a point to make and I don't think his post was a wind-up or anything to take offence at

I made the decision not to take her to the vet and fortunately she seems good today.  Recently I took my sick hen to the vet, and despite treatment and an x-ray etc she still died, which is why I went for the watch and see with this girl as I thought she had the same condition.

My vet ( who is a specialist in exotics, including poultry) says that if a chook is suddenly head in, tail down, fluffed up, sleepy, looking for a quiet place etc. ( not all at the same time of course) i.e. looking ill, it is because they are in pain.  They ignore illness as such and carry on as it would be suicide to do otherwise.  It's pain that they show in sudden onset illness.

Hi CQ,

I hope your girl continues to improve and I know you'd not allow her to suffer.  I know how well you take care of them and how much you think of them.

You have made a judgment on how to proceed because you believe peace an no stress is best for her.  You are the person there seeing her and I am confident that your judgment is good.

Let us know how she goes.  Contact me if you want to!

Thanks Aunt Sally

Fortunately I've been able to watch her very closely and monitor her and she seems ok. She is eating, pecking at grass and doing the normal chickeny things. I am really surprised at her today compared to yesterday. I must be a good nurse  :D

So please she appears to be feeling a bit better CQ, now go and have a cup of tea and sit in front of the fan yourself. Keep us updated how she gets on.

WELL SAID NICKI!!!
To be perfectly honest SS i dont agree with YOU. It can only be a 'natural' death if nothing could have been done. Many of my birds have had the 'ordeal' of been taken to a vet. They have been unwell, even in pain, but are now fit and well enjoying their life.If you knew anything about chickens you would know there is no 'smallest sign of illness' with them as they hide illness very well so when you notice something is not right  they are usually poorly. Im not going to reply to anymore of your posts as i think you are just trying to wind people up and that isnt the ethos of this lovely forum

I am NOT trying to wind people up... this is my opinion and that why this is a forum - how dodo would it be if we did everything and thought everything the same?! What you must accept is that people do things differently to others and just because you don't agree with them, doesn't mean their opinion is wrong!

I care alot about my chickens but they are not pets to me. nobody said this forum was a place for chickens as pets did they? I came here for advice (some good advice I am happy to say) and I'm definitely not out to wind people up...

and by the way "natural" means without human intervention!

I understood what you meant SS and said so in my earlier post  :)

I've got that cup of tea now - nearly midnight and just got here.  My hen seems much improved and was eating and drinking normally, scratching about and sunbathing in the dirt (hole they dug in the lawn )  She looks a different bird  :nowink:    I'll feel happier when she's laid a whole egg

Great news the girl is picking up cs  :D any idea what the problem was? With her drinking so much could it been a case of what we call sun stroke? been hot around these parts but not sure about your area?  ???
Either way,ace news the girl is on the mend  :D :D :D

She seems fine now. I think her problems are egg related as she's over two years old and has laid loads of softies and wierdly shaped eggs

Here she is today, none the worse for being so ill a few days ago.  She is her old self but no eggs laid since she was poorly.
