Crushed Oyster Shell
« on: May 24, 2010, 09:23 »
I am trying to buy some Oyster shell grit, but everywhere around here only seems to do huge bags. I am in Central Scotland.
If anyone has some that they would be willing to give, etc i would be more than happy to pay postage. Or if anyone can point me in the right direction as to where to purchase some smaller quantities then would appreciate it.

in the absence of oyster shell then wash your old egg shells and bake. Then crush them (a rolling pin or pestle and morter are good for this) and put these in a seperate feeder for them. My vets advise doing this rather than buying oystershell  :D.
Also don't forget that they also need grit to help grind their feed  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Ah right Joyfull so even if I provide oyster shell, I still need to provide grit also. I thought this did the same job?
Now I had heard that using egg shells can encourage them to eat the eggs?
Joyfull do you just want to become my personal adviser (Ha ha !!)

You can buy tubs of 5kg from ascott.biz  the postage is reasonable too (I've had stuff sent to France before).

if your hens free range they may find enough grit anyway (mine eat my driveway  ;) ).
If you wash, then bake (removes any bacteria) then crush they will not recognise them as eggs

have a look in a pets at home type store, see if they have smaller bags of grit/oyster shell, or maybe a pigeon supplier

Info for French residents - I just bought a 5 kg bag from Agrial.  I did have to ask for it though as it was stashed under a shelf, nowhere near all the rest of the chook stuff (!!!)  I think they also do 10 kg bags too.

Some of the pet shops sell oyster shell for caged birds in a small container.  Some also sell the larger grit/oyster grit by the pound.  Having said that, I live in Northern Ireland so could be different here.  Pet shops are beginning to realise that people are keeping hens now and have started getting supplies in - hopefully if people go in and ask for things they will get more the hint:)

I noticed that Pet Smart (the Asda of pet shops) is stocking a fairly respectable line in chicken care products, including small bags of mixed grit (includes oyster shell) and of oyster shell alone, I think for £2.99 a bag, which is pretty steep compared to feed merchant prices, but handy.

Happily, they also stock various mite products and, surprisingly, chick crumb.

There's usually one of these places on most shopping parks, so I hope it helps?

I use the mixed grit and add crushed eggshell too.
