According to my book it says the following

keep the plants well watered and remove any flowering shoots.
Feed with liquid nfertilizer during summer, if  this is not done then apply general purpose fertilizer once harvest has passed.
place a mulch of compost or well rotten manure over the crowns in Jan-Feb

For newly planted rhubarb crowns I wouldn't pick any this year. Just water well and remove any flowering shoots. Mulch in January and start lightly harvesting next spring and stop in May. The year after you should be able to take as much as it can produce. In any event stop picking by end July at the latest to allow the plant time to build up strength for the following year. All leaves will die back over winter and start again anytime from Jan depending on the variety.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.
