In desperation to get my salad leaf growing off to a quick start (the rest are tint specks of emerging green...), I thought I'd buy a tray of mixed seedlings for 99p and plant them out.

Has anyone done this before? .... and if so, with what success?

Not supermarket seedlings but cheap diy store bargain basement seedlings(looking rough). They are usually around 99p and produce good crops with a little TLC before planting out.  The cut and come lettuce are very good and could last a season if looked after.

Got some from that German Lmarket a week ago. I do this every time as we do not use much lettuce and can't be bothered to mess about when you get so many for 99p! The only thing with them is the leaves on when you buy them are very soft and usually die off so I would pick them for salads before planting. I am already picking new leaves. Good luck.

Yep, i have some which are going good guns at the moment, still plant plenty of my own seedlings though for variety.
