Butternut Squash in the North Of England?
« on: May 22, 2010, 08:12 »
I want to grow some butternut squash but have been reading that it is more difficult in the north. I have selected Cobnut F1 which I sowed a couple of weeks ago and have now germinated (in pots indoors). Am I likely to succeed and have others up here had much success? Thanks. Ian

In my experience they are a bit more difficult than other types of squash but you have at least selected probably the fastest-maturing variety which is obviously a very good start.

Don't try to be over-ambitious as to how many fruits you allow each plant to set; three or four is about the most you can expect per plant unless we do actually have an exceptional summer!  8)

Good luck!  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

We have been growing it for years without to much problem, they seem to sit around for ages hardly growing then explode into life and cover your plot, I am only a stone throw from you so you should be ok.
I tried to grow them verticaly one year, not a good idea so keep them on the ground and protect the squash as they appear.

Many thanks!. When you say protect the squash when they appear is that from slug damage or other. Thanks. Ian

Keep them off the ground, on a layer of straw, a piece of wood, old pallet boards etc. This is to stop it rotting from contact with the earth.

I generaly just stick things in the ground green side up.
