« on: May 18, 2010, 07:45 »
Desperate for help here!My chickens were really poorly, visit to vet -Tylan injections which helped but a few days later the symptoms returned(sneezing, breathless)tried Baytril which didn't work at all, then Tylan soluble, same story, they improved now 2 days off and they are starting again(have to say one was still on the last day of Tylan and she started sneezing again.Any advice appreciated.

get the chicken straight back to the vets - there are several antibiotics that they can try. My poots have been on aureomycin which has worked in the past but this time whilst they are improving their illness isn't going away completely. I am now picking up another sort today called Denagard tiamulin but this is expensive and only comes in 1 litre bottles (only need 10mls).
How long did you have them on each antibiotic course? some are 3-5 day courses and others are 7-10 days.
Staffies are softer than you think.

at the end of the course if they are still suffering it is best to ring the vets just to see if they can be on it for 10 days (this way there is free advice and you don't need to break off from the treatment). Mine have been on Aureomycin since Friday and whilst the boy is improving the girl is just a little bit better so I am continuing with this but collecting the other today to use at the same time (you can't do this with all AB's).
I haven't used Tylan so not sure if this can be mixed or used for 10 days.

Hi Joyfull, took Hazel to the vets today.I was worried about a swelling between her legs as well as the sneezing. He doesn't think anti biotics would do any good as she would have responded by now and thinks she has a tumour  :( probably why she's not fighting things off.She is happy enough and eating well  so I will let her potter around the garden until her quality of life deteriorates.
I read on a site to try Vicks around the beak, which I have, and I think it's helping, she's certainly not sneezing as much as yesterday,so will wait and see.

so sorry but like you say she is happier and until her quality of life deteriorates then let her potter aound. How are the other hens - the trouble is if she is infectious you don't want her mixing with the others otherwise it could be passed back to them - or did your vet think she wasn't still infectious?

No sneezing today!I think they are finally over it  finger's crossed!I put Vicks on beaks twice a day and Aloe vera in the water and they seem okay.
