Too late to start of squashes?
« on: May 18, 2010, 20:07 »
A friend to moving house and for some reason does not want to take his seeds with him (how much space do they take up).  So he has given me a variety of seeds most of which I will use next year as I have already got what I want planted.  However he has a packet of butternut squash seeds I was wondering if I sowed them this week could i still get a crop this year.  It says they are hardy so growing outside in Yorkshire should be alright?
Time waits for no man and I can't wait for growth.

Butternut squash are not hardy ::)  Start them off inside the same as courgettes or pumpkins and when they are a bit bigger, and all frosts have finished, you can plant them out :)

I sowed pumpkins and courgettes today. I would say its just the right time to sow your butternut squashes. If you have a propagator it would speed them up.

They do need a long growing time, feed and water them well. Lovely vegetable.

Sowed Cobnut (butternut) squash about 10 days ago indoors on windowsill and they are just breaking through now. Hoping to do well because you cant beat Butternut squash soup mmmmmmmmmmmm!
The force is strong in this one!
