Beautiful birds - but completely daft, particularly the show off males.

I've always felt that cock pheasants were one of the few creatures on the planet that deserved to die because of their stupidy and vanity. They just stroll across the road in front of large, fast moving vehicles and seem to think that looking beautiful makes them invincible.

And when they squat on tarmac and think they`re invisible. :D

8doubles - I never realised that they've got rid of the game licence - I've been out of the loop for too long (although in fairness you didn't need one for duck/wildfowling).

I think that technically roadkill (including reared pheasant and partridge) usually belongs to the land owner as 'wild animals' belong to the owner of the land it occupies (and is therefore treated differently to pets and livestock) - so if it scurried onto a farmer's field before expiring you've be commiting trespass and theft if you went to retrieve it. If found on the road/verge it belongs to the highways agency (or whatever the current government body is now).

As kids we used to eat a lot of roadkill, and I'd still pick up a fresh hare.

Word of warning about deer and any other carcass that you haven't seen killed in front of you - do make sure that it's fresh, that you know what to look for with respect to disease etc when you prepare/gralloch it etc, and that it hasn't been poisoned.

Enjoy,

SS

Totally agree with all you`ve said SS apart from the picking up a hare , too strong for me. :)
I do think that any landowner wishing to claim ownership of road killed game should also be responsible for vehicle damage (no chance).
If it is safe (traffic wise)  i still pick up fresh game , Roe is my favourite. :D
