Spuds and Brassica's
« on: May 12, 2010, 16:56 »
I live in Bedford and am a new plot holder; I have read all the postings with great interest, such vast knowledge out there - many thanks.

My two questions are.
1.    I put my spuds in the depth of a spade then covered them up to to make a small
hillock, do I still need to earth them up when they show or are they deep enough.

2.    The area I will put brassica's in I have limed 2 weeks ago and the rain has washed
it in, do I also put lime into the planting hole, raw as it were or mixed with soil

Welcome to the forum.

1) If your potatoes come through while we are still having frosts then carry on earting them up.

2) Putting lime in the planting hole is often advised where you have club root. Do you have club root on your site? ask an 'old boy' he will know  :)

Thanks for thr replies, so..............spuds no need to earth provided the frost keeps near Alaska - and I'll ask an old allomenteer the club root question.

Frosts are about at the moment in your neck of the woods, if the leaves are showing on your spuds I would earth them up to cover the leaves.  If they are no showing yet no need to worry.

Welcome to the forums as well  :)
