Hi and New Chicks
« on: May 12, 2010, 13:01 »
Just wanted to say Hello, we have just hatched our own chicks from an incubator for the first time,

I have had a quick look through and hope this is not a repost, but was wondering if mites are normally a problem for chicks, the brooder has been made by us and disinfected prior to use so red mite shouldnt be a problem, but the chicks do seem to scratch themselves a bit.
Not sure if we are being over worried new parents but should we treat for mites anyway, (and if so how) or is this normal chick behaviour.

Thanks in advance
 :)

how old are the chicks, their proper feathers coming through could be making them itch. Pick them up and have a good inspection, if they have mites or lice you should be able to see them.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks joyful, the chicks are only 4 days old and they are starting to get there wing feathers. I havent picked them up yet, apart from when I moved them to the brooder. I will have a good look when I pick them up.

Should you use a preventative treatment for mites on chicks or is it not reccommended?

Thanks again

I doubt it would be lice/mites at such a young age, they havent been anywhere to pick them up :)

Thanks Lizie, I did think the same, think I will stop worrying,

Do people normally use a routine prenvative treatment for lice or not?

Thanks
