Chilli plants in ground, on plot?
« on: May 13, 2010, 15:04 »
I’ve grown around thirty chilli plants from seed, all are now in the greenhouse in 6" pots and growing well. There's a general mix, Caribbean blend, hot cayenne, jalapeno. All are doing well and will require moving into larger pots soon. I didn’t expect the success I’ve had with them to be honest.  8)

Problem is, my greenhouse is not the biggest and with my herbs and tomatoes it doesn’t leave me a great deal of room. I will keep around x10 plants in the greenhouse, give away a few and move a few out into the garden when it is warmer.

What to do with the rest?

I have some space on the plot, can I simply plant them out into the soil and leave them to get on with it? Does anyone do this with good results?

Thanks.
We lived for days on nothing but food and water.

They should be OK if it ever warms up but I'd cover them with something for the next week or two - cut off pop bottles, fleece or something. Harden them off first as well, the nights are still very cold. Frost, or even very cold night winds wll kill them.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Thanks. I wasnt planning to put them out until early June, they've been in a cold greenhouse since the start of April.

I grow about 8 plants of small-fruited chilli, the plants are pretty small, and they are not all that prolific, but I still have plants to give away and more than enough chillies for 365 day usage :)

I keep meaning to ask chilli-fanatics what they do with all theirs? (although maybe that's not the point?!)

I've never grown chillis in the open ground but this year am going to have a go, with the protection of a cloche made of pipe and plastic sheet.

I'll keeo them in until June though  :D

I give mine away !!

I'm not a chilli fanatic but this year have grown 5 different types (for myself and friends) - It just sounded interesting growing chillis with lemon and mango tastes. I don't actually like the hot taste of any chillis but I think Scotch Bonnets have a really "fruity" taste to them.

I suppose it's the same with any fruit and veg  :)

I've gone a smidge overboard with chillis this year, but I intend to eat them all ;)

Majority of mine will be going in the ground in one of the greenhouses, rest will be in pots in the potting shed.

Eat them ... what else ? Some are used fresh but a large proportion are dried and powdered. I blend 5 or 6 powders together for "chilli powder" that goes into a curry  to give a balanced heat / taste and burn time... its all very scientific you know

I've gone a little over board again despite telling myself not to - I've got 31 varieties but only 1 or 2 plants of each.

Im not half as fanatical as some !

"Eat them"? But ... but ... but ... my half dozen plants produce more than I can use in a year, and I love chilli - have it on my food most days. You must be putting yours on your cornflakes too? :D Chilli-flakes in a bowl with some milk for breakfast perhaps? :)

Well im only growing one variety, Jalapeno.

We slice them into discs! and then use them on home made pizzas and in burritos and wraps (etc) we also stuff them with cream cheese and cover in breadcrumbs (chilli poppers) MMM MMM MMM we can't get enough of them  :D

I'll be growing 8 plants in pots on the greenhouse stageing and 8 plants outside in a pipe and clear plastic cloche.
