Would like some advice on growing strawberries. Just purchased a home and have found strawberries growing along our fence in yard. What is length of season, how can i protect from pests, etc. Would appreciate any feedback.

Thank You

Length of season depends on the variety, anything from afew weeks to a couple of months.  I have a mix of summer fruiting and summer/autumn fruiting.  The only protection really is to cover them particularly when fruiting, net will do it, raised up on stakes or canes, or if you enjoy diy you can always build a metal mesh cage.

What kind of winter lows & summer highs do you get there in upstate NY, charlie?   We have a regular posters from Ontario and from Hanover,PA so hopefully Trillium or Bill will be strawberry growers.

And welcome to the Friendly Forum.

Strawberries attract greenfly so you would do well to pick those off so you don't encourage mosaic disease.   You can increase your stock by pinning down the runners (I only allow a couple of runners for each plant and cut off the rest to preserve the plant's strength).   Mulch with straw under the ripening strawberries to keep them dry.    Watch out for slug damage.   Try not to get the ripening fruit wet when watering otherwise they are prone to mildew.  Throw the parent plants out after 3-4 years to avoid disease and smaller fruits.   Feed with balanced fertiliser.  Pick out any weeds when small.
