No Eggs Yet
« on: May 10, 2010, 16:00 »
Hey guys,
I have two hens for 5 weeks now.  When I got them they were 22 weeks old and the seller said they would lay after two weeks.  I still have no eggs.  I know I need to be patient but I'm just wondering how long i should wait before getting worried.
Any advice at all will help?

Are you sure they were 22 weeks when you bought them???

Is there any chance they could be laying away?

What breed are they?  Most hybrids are classed as POL from about 18-20 weeks, but some pure breeds take much longer - upwards of 30 weeks.

What do their combs look like?  When they are ready to lay they will get larger and turn a bright red.  If you turn the hen over, a space of about 2 finger widths is "feelable" below their vent.

I bought 5 hens at point of lay, but 4 took about 1 month after I bought them to actually start laying. The other still hasn't started yet and i'd say it has been around 5 weeks since I bought her. She is very healthy, but scared of me and the other chickens. She has a very red comb ect. and she is making noises indicating that she might be about to start laying.
Do they run away from you when you go near them??  If they do you should probably give them time and they'll start soon.

All lives are precious.
