Size of eggs
« on: May 09, 2010, 15:27 »
Two of my girls are now laying on a fairly regular basis and their combs are growing and a lovely bright red.  The eggs are still very small - how long does it take for what you could call a standard size egg to be laid?  Just want reassurance that I'm feeding etc etc correctly ie layers until they have free use of the garden and a few treats at night - mealworms, seeds, grapes, melon (not all at once I might add!!).  They are all very healthly and happy and cheeky and demanding little witches, so is it just a case of "growing up" and into bigger eggs??
Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional!

egg size depends on the breed as well as the age of the hens  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

It's the Marans that are laying at the moment and they are around 26/27 weeks old  :)

mine are about 26 weeks or so and are pretty regular in laying each day.  I get two smallish eggs and a whopper from the Silver Sussex.  Her's look really funny against the others.  weird

Yes, as the hens age the eggs will get slightly bigger, but it does depend on the breed.

My cuckoo maran Brenda Lee is almost 3 now and she lays the largest shiny dark brown eggs - just perfect for dippy eggs in the mornings  :D
