Orpingtons or Light Sussex for beginners ?
« on: April 28, 2010, 22:33 »
The title says it all really, we like the look of both but are undecided at the moment.

Can we mix varieties in a single enclosure?

Bantams or large best for a small garden enclosure?

Two wrongs don't make a right but three lefts do.

Hi Uba, I would say yes to mixing varieties of chooks.  just like people, some get on, some don't whatever varieties you have.  However in a small garden I would personally go for bantam sized chooks so they have more room!

Hi Uba
I have both breeds (Large fowl) and both are really friendly, i agree with Grannie Banty's would be better if you have a smaller garden enclosure, i started with the Orpingtons, i have blacks and buffs, they come running as soon as i open the gate, (normally they think i have food!)
Dont count ya chickens till they hatch!!!!!

thanks for that folks, what about mixing the two if they come from different sources? We cant seem to find a breeder that sells both types in bantam size. Granny, I am trying to get a few more posts made tonight so i can pm you as suggested by joyful.

Prepare for welcome spams!!

Thats a little far for me Bonnie, we are based in Lincolnshire. There is a breeder of both large and bantam Orpingtons very close to me that I found on this site (A1 and Chicken crazy). We are hopefully going to have a look over the weekend.

Hi Uba
I have both Buff Opringtons and a Light Sussex mixed in the 6 others all mixed and they are fine.  I have had my Buffs from 5 weeks old, and made sure that I handled them everyday ( lots of cuddles ) and now out of all of my girls they are my favorites, out of all - they love a cuddle and will even fall asleep in my arms.
But they are big and buxom - twice the size of some of my other banties.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Chooks :- Amber, Ashely, Marol, Jazz, Bluebell, Cleopatra,Buffy, Angel and Summer, Cats:- Dee and Jay, Fish Hermionee, Harry and Ron.

orpingtons and sussex are really good for begginers, i'd say out of the two light sussex would be better, orpingtons tend to suffer from cardivascular diisorders with them being so big and round. have you considered pekins? they're a beautiful little bantam and very friendly, they look just like a ball or feathers.
