Hen will not stand!
« on: April 28, 2010, 06:30 »
Just went out to give the girls there breakfast and one of my black rocks is still in the coop. She was just on the floor with her legs out behind her i picked her up but she won't take any wait. When I try to stand her she just curls her feet and goes down. She is not sneezing like two of my others could this be something else. What does everyone think. Help please.

Oh dear bogof :(  When a hen goes off her legs (literally!) like that there doesn't seem to be much you can do.

Do you know if your pullets were vaccinated against Mareks?

I'm not au fait with problems such as this, so will let others take over.

she doesn't sound too clever but before you rush her off to the vets check underneath her feet for bumblefoot or at her toe ends for toe balls.  If nothing untowards is wrong with her feet then a trip to the vets with suspected Mareks is needed urgently. Even vaccinated hens can get it if the vaccination wasn't used within 1 1/2 hours of mixing as grumpy dad found out last year  :(
Staffies are softer than you think.

Just checked her and she's laid an egg! But still won't get up. Vent is normal but her crop is full! Feet look ok I'm going to ring the breader and ask for advice but any help would be great.

While you're waiting for professional assistance you could give water via a syringe and massage the crop gently to avoid dehydration and stimulate digestive process. Hope all turns out OK.
