Rabbit proof fencing
« on: April 26, 2010, 16:13 »
I am hoping to get some advice on the best sort of rabit proof fencing, what to use, how high does it need to be and do you have to 'bury' some of the fencing to stop them burrowing underneath?

Also I have been trying to work out how to send a post to the noticeboard, I was trying to do it in the fencing section but have not yet worked out how, anyone else have difficulty learning how to use this site or is it just me?

Hoping for some hints on the above though

Hi NickyG

Not sure about the fencing issue, but if you click on 'Forum Home' near the top left of the page, you'll get the list of different forum boards - with descriptions of what each one is for.  Click on the one you want to post in, then either reply to an existing message by clicking on it and then clicking reply; or to start a new post just click New Topic.

Hope that answers your question about posting.

Hi NickyG,

When we got our plot in October it was over-run with rabbits.  We fenced the whole thing off with chicken wire (1200mm x 25mm), dug in to about a spade's depth.  Since we finished there's been no sign of them in there.  They were eating all the leaves off the raspberry canes the previous holder had left, as soon as the fence went up the raspberries have flourished. :)

They don't seem to have bothered trying to dig under it so I can't guarantee we dug it in enough - perhaps they've just found easier pickings somewhere else...

The wire size is apparently the DEFRA recommended one to keep the rascals out

The wire that you bury is best if it goes down 6 inches and then 6 inches horizontally outwards to stop the rabbits digging down and under.

yip they normally start digging at the fooot of the obstuction.but if you have really tasty crops,it's not unusual for them to dig 6-12 inches away from the netting.
