Gisela 5 rootstock
« on: April 08, 2010, 20:07 »
Am buying a cherry to go into our 12' high fruit cage (husband likes to do things on a large scale  ;))
What size does Gisela 5 come up to at maturity ? Can't find anything despite googling. We want something that will benefit from the full height of the cage.
Happy, hippy mama with a love of baking, gardening and cake decorating

Just as well the cage is 12 ft high as gisela rootstocks average 10 ft high if kept checked at that height.

One point about the gisela rootstock trees is that they must have good soil to live in, no maybes. Poor soil sites will be a waste of money as the trees will not produce and eventually die off. This is a peculiarity with this rootstock.

Here's more than you'll ever want to know about them:

Here's a short article about Gisela stock in Canada.

http://www.actahort.org/members/showpdf?booknrarnr=451_23

As for sources, you're likely to find some in the major retail suppliers like Sheridan Nurseries, Humber Nursery, Weall & Cullen, etc. I'd phone any or all and ask specifically if their cherry trees are on gisela stock. They may not have the answer immediately but would find out and get back to you.
