What different veg can I grow in the same beds
« on: April 24, 2010, 09:47 »
I have just under half a allotment plot and I am struggling to get all the veg I want to grow into the space I've got.

I read somewhere on these forums that you can grow courgettes below sweetcorn and salad crops below runner beans, is this/am I correct  ?  and is there anything else that could be grown together ?

cheers  :)

pumpkins, beans, and sweetcorn can all go in together  :) you see the beans are meant to climb the sweetcorn and the pumpkin covers the ground  :)

what to look out for really is not to grow brassicas or spuds and toms in the same place,
so next year you can swap these around so you don't introduce any disease
when im with my 9yr old she's the sensible one

Blackcap is right . Its called the three sisters method , grow something tall like sweetcorn or runner beans then something mid way like dwarf runner beans and then the small stuff , ie; radishes, lettuce (catch crop).

there has always been a very mixed response to three sisters growing, so you may like to read this old topic  before you decide :)

I found that pumpkin/squash/courgette does well around either corn or beans...but the 3 together was asking too much from my soil :(
Quick growing salad can just be popped in between other crops anywhere you won't tread on it ..oops ...it is in and harvested so quickly that it doesn't need a place of it's own.

My experiences are the same as Mum's; I think squash + sweetcorn just about works but beans as well is just asking too much of the soil and our recent summers.

The idea of catch-cropping is to grow a quick-maturing crop in the spaces between slower growing plants so that they can be in and out before the slower and bigger plants take up the space, so yes, salad leaves and radishes are a good bet!

(Mum Rules!  :) )
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Thank you for your replies, I'm feeling a lot happier now  :)  going to put my courgettes in with the sweetcorn  and lettuce in with the runner/french beans .

That will free up 2 beds which I intend to grow some more potatoes  8)  only trouble is I've mixed up my earlies and maincrop    oh well , they'll all get eaten  :)
