Sourcrop
« on: April 29, 2010, 07:40 »
Hi, one of our ex-batts has had a watery feeling crop. I managed to empty a lot of gunge out of her and gave her live yoghurt and she seemed to improve a bit, managed to eat afew pellets and drink.

I have been checking her crop regularly but she seems very thin and the crop never fees like she has eaten much. Do I 'force' feed her or let her be? How long does it take for the crop to recover?

She still looks very under the weather, but definitely more alert and interested.

Just syringed her a slug of cod liver oil and have an instant massive improvement, hope this might help someone else. Now what is it they say about talking to yourself?!

This will be useful for other people - thanks for the update
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I personally wouldn't force feed my hens. Are you sure it was sour crop Spadefighter?

As far as I can tell from these pages, got a lot of stinking muck from her crop which seemed to help a lot . Do you suspect something else? Has been eating today but still very weak, not looking as good as earlier .

If she just has her layers pellets and clean water I'd hold off other stuff foods and see how she goes.

If her crop is empty first thing in the morning that should be a good sign.

I've no idea what can be wrong.

There are folks here who'd know. Just hope they'll be along to give you some advise soon

Thanks for your advice compostqueen, sad to say she got weaker and died in the night. Tried my best, at least another ex batt had a bit of a retirement.

Thanks, sorry about yours too. Stings a bit to lose her when I thought she might recover, I guess her crop was damaged or there were other things wrong
