Planting deep
« on: April 27, 2010, 22:30 »
my greenhouse border is raised so i want to plant my plants as deep as possible, i know it will be ok for toms but i'm worried about my cues because people say they die if the base of their stem is wet?( also melons peppers and aubergnes)

Toms are the only plant you can put in deeper than their current soil line. The skin is tougher and is programmed to quickly root. Cukes, aubergines and melons have softer skin that will simply rot if planted above the pot soil line and onto the soft tissue. But given the deep bed, they'll quickly fill it with roots so it's not all bad news.

The method I use is to transplant the cukes into a bottomless pot, this then goes into the bed, slightly raised, you water the bed (not in the pot with the cukes) as normal but the pot will protect the base of the cukes. Hope you understand and visualize the method.
