vent gleet . treat or cull ?
« on: April 15, 2010, 20:39 »
Hi all , I have an 24 month old cream legbar, healthy in every way apart from a very messy vent area and a creamy, smelly discharge.

Vent gleet I am sure after doing some research, unfortunately the advice and theories have been quite conflicting

Anyone got experience with this in birds ? Help much appreciated .

Vent Gleet is a yeast infection often caused by eating mouldy food.  I've had no experience of it but it says HERE that it can be treated with an antifungal. Nystatin can be prescribed by your vet.

Avipro is a pro-biotic and will help to increase the good gut bacteria But I think if the bird has a bad infection then the antifungals first would be my choice and definitely followed by a long course of Avipro as you sugest Dean.

correct Aunty, you need nystatin or canistan but get it prescibed by a vet so you get the correct dosage worked out. Unfortunatly mine that had it did die (autopsy proved it was vent gleet) but they was young. An adult bird can get over it. If they have got it from a cockerel then he will need treating also.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks,  Just back from work so will get sorted asap. Got all of the birds on cider vinigar at the moment as this was advised by a pal of mine.

Clean her up in the morning to try to give a bit of relief, and smooth some yoghurt on her bum, apparerntley this will cool her down.

Dont keep cock birds so no prob there.

 Regards Alby

Have you checked their feed - sometimes if it goes mouldy (either through getting damp or falling on the ground and then eaten weeks later or even old shop stock that hasn't been stored correctly) this can cause vent gleet.
I empty my sacks into old metal dustbins and keep the lids on. I always use up the old feed before opening a new sack.

Sory for the delay but PC died and now on a new rather nice lap top  :D

Cleaned her up and cooled her bottom and she is fine now !!  Nothing but Cider Vinegr in the water seems to have done the tric.

F ood is fine, complete clean out of bedding and food every Sunday , also keep it in an alibin.

     Thanks  Alby
