Santero onions
« on: April 17, 2010, 11:00 »
Anyone growing 'Santero' onion sets from Thompson & Morgan this year. I'm growing both these and Setton and the Setton are shooting ahead, Santero seems to have poor growth, if at at all. Santero was on offer. and I usually go for the offers in addition to tried and trusted ones.

I had a lot of white rot last year. I've managed to find a good source of cheap garlic powder (equestrian suppliers), in order to try out the 'onion soup' cure on my non-allium beds in the rotation. Anyone have any success with this (or wonder what I'm talking about)?

I first came across the idea as a method of controlling club root. As white rot is also a soil-borne fungus, I thought it might apply to alliums, and after some research, found that this was the case.

It may be a few years before I know the results, and before I get round to testing the bed by planting alliums in it. If I plant alliums there in the too-near future, it may have the result of bringing back the fungus itself, so I'm going to give it at least three years.

The minimum time of non-allium planting I found by research, was 8 years, the maximum was 18 years!
I'm just using the 'onion soup' method to accelerate this process.
