Runner beans
« on: April 15, 2010, 11:11 »
I've "found" a patch in the garden where I can plant runner beans. I'm doing a trench full of fresh kitchen waste, chicken poo and newspaper to help retain water and let the beans fix nitrogen but do they need any rotted manure and/or fertiliser as well?

Is your chicken poo well rotted?  If not it might be too acidic for the beans.  Good compost is ok on it's own but a little manure would be good to add as they are hungry feeders.  Some fertiliser raked in would also help.
Cheese makes everything better.

Would it be good to add chicken poo pellets to the pots I am going to grow my beans in? Sorry for the hijack but saw some on offer in morrisons the other day so will go and buy them if needed also how many?

Thanks.

Pelleted chicken poo will do fine (but don't go too mad with it, it's a moist water-retentive growing medium which is the most important requirement for runner beans.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
