green toms
« on: October 05, 2010, 10:05 »
Hi all I have loads of green toms left on my plants. Now the weather has turned should i take them off? if so will they rippen indoors as i dont like wasting anything?

Secondly can i use the soil from the grow bags to add to my raised beds even if they have slight blight?

Cheers all

Mickeyboy ;) ;)

Stick them in a paer bag with a ripe banana - that should get them going - someone else can explain about the gas!

anything showing disease (even compost) should be binned - again I am sure someone else will concur though...  ::)

Bananas give off ethyelene gas which encourages ripening.

You'll be safe using the compost , blight needs live plant material in order to survive.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Depends what the disease is, I wouldn't go spreading stuff around that's infected with clubroot, for instance.

Chillis - haven't got a clue really - mine have ripened OK outside, but I'm not normally a chilli grower, best ask someone who is!

Mickeyboy

I've picked my big chillis (cayenne) and stuck them on the kitchen windowsill and they've turned red nicely. The small ones (SuperChilli) I've picked and strung on a ristra, and they're turning red and drying out nicely too. They seem to only need a bit of warmth. I've got a couple of SuperChilli plants which were later, and the chillis still look a bit undersized, so I'm going to bring those plants in the house and stick them on a windowsill, to let them grow on a bit more before picking.
