Araucana with a wonky head???? Help please
« on: April 03, 2010, 16:20 »
I have noticed my Araucana is walking around today with her head slightly twisted. It looks as if she is turning her head to see, but she's not. This aside she is in good health eating, laying and being as busy as usual. I wondered if she had got her head caught in something (possibly the netting) and twisted it (she isn't the brightest hen)? I have had a look at her and felt her neck and all seems ok, no obvious swelling or lumps and bumps, although she is shaking her head now. Any suggestions - please!

there are several illness in hens which show up as wonky necks - 1 is called stargazing which can be brought on by trauma and a lack of b vitamins and another is wry neck (sometimes called crook neck) and also botulism. I would advise you to take her to a vets just to get her checked over.
Staffies are softer than you think.

She is 10 months old and otherwise healthy, I don't think she is deficient in vitamins and am hoping she has just twisted her neck a bit. However I had put some tonic in her water, this afternoon. I shall keep a close eye on her over the next few days and then take her to the vet if she doesn't show any signs of getting better. I am hoping it is not a neurological infection or worse. At the moment she doesn't seem affected by it.  The only change this week has been that I have wormed the flock with Verm-X, wouldn't have thought this could damage her?

I wondered how your hen is now because I have once which seems to have similar symptoms.  Twisiting head from side to side, you would nearly think it couldnt see properly but I know it can.  It is eating and drnking but cannot get up the ladder to roost and even has difficulty with small steps, nearly as though it has vertigo.
