Strange egg shells
« on: April 11, 2010, 12:07 »
two of my girls are laying abnormal eggs.  One has granules of eggshell on the outside of the egg and a very thin shell.  The other has just started laying ones with strange colourings.  Any ideas of what this might be please?

Cheese makes everything better.

They've been laying for at least seven months.  The one with the thin shell has never produced a normal egg.  Her eggs didn't have the granules on them until recently.   But the other one with the striped and mottled egg has produced perfect eggs until the last week.

The dark colour at the base of the egg is the colour they usually are all over.

the lumpy bits are calcium deposits (one of my araucanas often has these) - hopefully she will be ok - keep an eye on her though Ice because if her shells are ofetn thin they could burst inside her - have you tried giving her a sprinkle of limestone flour on a piece of grape for a couple of days? This might help her.
As for the others I sometimes get odd coloured eggs some like your have the colour fading - no idea why but they seem ok. Perhaps their ink cartridge needs changing  ;)
Staffies are softer than you think.

horsey places sell it or failing that a pet shop that sells stuff for reptiles (it is also available from auction sites), but only give her a little pinch for just a few days.
As for the colour faded eggs I just put it down to them rushing the egg out all of a sudden as the colour is only put on at the last stage (if you get a really fresh laid egg you can sometimes rub the colour off).  :)

They probably just need some more calcium :D they should be alright though. The first egg that was laid by my Warren was fairly normal except for this weird blob of calcium deposit on the shell which didn't affect the taste! Good luck in Chicken Keeping!

If you want some limestone PM me with your address, I bought some for one of my girls  - it worked- but you only need a tiny bit and they only seem to sell it in HUGE amounts (of course).  Got loads of the stuff left so let me know, I will post 1st class.

PM sent Kazoo and thank you very much for your kind offer.  I will of course send you the postage and a few seeds if you would like some.  I have way too many as usual. :)
