how many eggs will fit?
« on: April 11, 2010, 00:48 »
Hi,

One of my hens has recently gone broody and iv talked to the family and decided to try my luck at hatching again (my last atempt went horrible, when the eggs didn't hatch on the last day the hen went bonkers ate the eggs then promptly died a few days later  ) But seeing as i cannot decide on just one breed to hatch (its between more sablepoots or vorweks at the mo  :D) I thought id get both, but i seem to only be able to get them in sixes, wheras i can just put the spare in the incubator, i was wondering how many eggs would be a safe amount to put under her?Gandelf  (::)) is a 9 month old jersey giant (who isn't rly that giant  ???) any help would be appriciated, sorry fi this seems like a silly question  :)
I live with my black brahma cockerel Trophamus and all my other chooks :)

I'm no chicken expert, I only started a year ago. But just put less under her than you think. If you put too many under some that were actually fertile may not get incubated but if there are less then they and the chicks will be easier to attend to. Also make sure you have room to spare for these babies ;D Gandelf is an awesome name for a chicken btw.
It's like America...But south!

How long has she been broody? Have you moved her to a broody coup yet?
As the two breeds you have chosen aren't at all the same size I would just stick with one breed only and hatch the others in the incubator - the sablepoots will be tiny if you go by their egg size. I have a sablepoot pair and 4 eggs in Grannie Annies incubator at the moment.
A large fowl hen will happily sit on a dozen large fowl eggs, I have at the moment a banty sitting on 7 large fowl eggs with room to spare (and my other banty has just hatched 6 large fowl araucanas for me). Not all may be fertile and some could die in their shells so put one or two more eggs under her then you want just in case eg if you want 4 then place 5 under her, 6 wanted then place 7 or 8 under her  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

she's been broody a week or two, and not yet as were not completally set whether or not to do it, i think the incubator might be a bit more reliable :D and thanks ill definately keep that in mind!
