I have sown some Zermats, in the cold greenhouse in rootrainers.  It is supposed to be a baby leek.  They look like pieces of thin string, about six inches long, at the moment.

10 weeks sounds a bit optimistic. I grow two lots of leeks, one for maincrop and one to pull as baby leeks. Last year the baby leeks (Zermatt) took about 16 weeks before they worth using.

16 weeks still sounds ok, will give them some extra weeks and see what happens

I've got two sorts in (Musselborough and something else - not Zermatt) and they took a good fortnight to show...  The onions sown at the same time were a good 4 or 5 days quicker away.

I sowed my leeks (Porvite) two weeks ago and no signs of germination yet! They're in my plastic greenhouse on a nice sunny balcony and no danger of frosts so not the temp that's holding them back - hope I've not got a duff packet!

Just checked in the notebook (- that I keep early in the year and then forget about when it is all less new and exciting) and it was 3 weeks before I got my first leek up and they are still coming thro' 6 ( ) weeks after planting.  Some are 4 inches high and some are still little green humps that have appeared in the last 24 hrs.

nil desperandum!   :D :D

I think onions and leeks can stand a lower temp to germinate - about 15C. Having said that, I have had trouble germinating last year's onions - all at 15C as stated on the packet which was kept cold over winter. Same with some other veg and flower seeds. I got Musselberg and Robinson's Mammoth leeks this year and they are doing well at 15C which is now above that in my cold greenhouse. I wish they would germinate as well as the weed and unwanted flower and sycamore seedlings that are appearing by the ton as we type...!  :tongue2: :tongue2: :tongue2:
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
